What is a Justice of the Peace?
That's a great question!
It is also known as "The People's Court" because it interacts with so many parts of the community. It's sort of like Judge Judy. Some of their duties include:
Criminal & Traffic Cases
- Speeding Tickets
- DUIs and related offenses
- Class C Misdemeanors punishable by fines
- Truancy
Civil Court
Can hear cases up to $20,000
Magisterial Duties
- accepting criminal complaints
- issuing warrants
- appointing legal counsel
Other Duties
The most notable duty is the one to be able to perform marriages! However, there are still far more duties to that a JP does outside of the ones listed here.
My Vision
1 / Establish Night Court
Establishing evening hours so less working people have to take time off. Everyone deserves their right to be heard without the fear of losing money or their job just to show up to court.
2 / Have Ample Interpreters for ANY Language
Ensuring ample interpreters are available regardless of the language being spoken be it Tamil, Telugu, Arabic, Spanish, etc. Everyone deserves to have their case heard, not just those who know English.
3 / Modernization
Integrating more technological elements into the court process to ensure the swift management and execution of every case that enters the JP court.
